"I just saw something in the hourglass," Amadea was in a hurry to explain when she got back. "Nothing through the wall. The portal is either closed, or it never was a portal."

She concentrated on the hourglass and closed her eyes, sending a thought telepathically into it: hello? anyone in there?

All three SPERTS members heard a faint, raspy whisper from the hourglass: "Shaaaaake meeeeee ... and meet me."

--

Amadea's IQ is 12, roll is 6. She takes a -5 IQ penalty for telesending to someone she has only just glimpsed for a moment, but succeeds anyway.

Curious and unafraid of whatever danger may await, Amadea shook the hourglass and waited to see what would happen.

"What are you doing?" asked Dane, sounding alarmed. He unclicked the safety on his rifle and stood back, bending into a ready position.

The blood in the hourglass rose and took shape. The figure from the drawings - the Boogieman - appeared in shadow on the wall. Then he stepped out of the wall, still a whirling mass of darkness, and slashed a claw at Amadea.

"Fear the darkness," he rasped.

--

Boogieman takes the Move and Attack maneuver (page 368), which means he takes -4 to his attack skill. He succeeds anyway, however.
Amadea has Dodge 8 (page 326). She rolls 10, failing the dodge. Boogieman's attack hits! Amadea takes 5 cutting damage to her torso (page 398). This means she takes the maximum shock penalty of -4 (page 381) to DX and IQ on her next turn.

The Boogieman is now next to Amadea and 2 yards away from Dane.

SUMMARY

Amadea takes 5 damage, -4 shock penalty.

--

Turn order starts with the highest Basic Speed and moves down, as follows: Boogieman, Dane, Amadea. You can post in whatever order you like, but actions will be resolved in that order.

Wang is asleep on the couch in the next room 8 yards away, but will probably be awakened by loud noises, etc. Wang, I will make a modified Perception roll for you each round, awakening you if appropriate.

This combat will take place without the use of the hex grids or special tactical combat rules (unless they become necessary). We ARE using hit locations, critical hits and failures, shock, etc.

For Cynthia's sake, please spell out exactly what you're doing and what it means on your turns. I'm annotating where in the Basic Set you can read more about mechanics; players don't need to do this.

Being a ghost who can't get hurt has made me too bold, Amadea realized as she reeled back in pain. She was too shocked to retaliate, so switched to being insubstantial.

--

Concentrate to become insubstantial.

Amadea disappeared, and moments later, a hail of bullets filled the air where she had been standing. The boogieman reeled in pain, clutching its head. Then, it viciously turned on Dane. Its claws extended to gash the dragonborn rifleman.

--

Amadea insubstantiates.

Dane's all-out attack gives him +4 to hit, raising his Rifle skill to 20. His spray of bullets further increases his chances by +3 (page 373), making his total 23. However, his choice to target the Skull gives him -7 to hit, making his final total 16. The Boogieman fails his Dodge check. Dane has a margin of success of 8. Divided by the weapon recoil of 2, Dane hits the Boogieman 4 times in the head, inflicting a staggering 63 piercing damage. That's a ton of damage, Jim. However, the Boogieman appears to be Homogenous (page 380), meaning piercing damage is reduced by 80%. The final total is 12.

Wang wakes up on the couch, 5 yards from the bedroom door. He must actually reach the door to fire inside.

The Boogieman fails to strike Dane; it appears to be suffering badly from the bullet wounds.

SUMMARY

Amadea is safe.
Dane does 12 damage to the Boogieman.
Wang is awake.

--

Still learning how ranged attacks work ... that seemed pretty complicated but it'll prly get easier the more we do it.

Amadea, if you would like to sit this fight out insubstantially let me know and we'll work through the post order without waiting for you. If you do wanna get involved, that's cool too. Just substantiate, roll against your DX to punch, and roll a single die to see how much damage you do (that would take at least 2 turns - one to substantiate, one to step and attack).

For more information on damage, see page 16. For more on melee attacks, see page 369.

Amadea faded in behind the Boogieman, rivaling her foe for creepiest entrance to the room. Dane calmly emptied his clip into the Boogieman. The bullets zipped into its body, tearing gleaming holes that slammed into the wall behind it. Mary Elsworth screamed in terror from the main room: "Michael! What is going on?"

Wang appeared in the doorway, pistols at the ready.

--

Dane gains +3 to hit from firing so many bullets, making his margin of success 7. Divided by recoil 2 means he lands 3 shots for 57 piercing damage. The Boogieman's Homogenous nature reduces the damage by 80%, making the final total 11.

The Boogieman steps and successfully grapples Dane's neck (page 370). This does no damage, but if Dane can't shake it off the Boogieman will be able to strangle him. Dane, see the sidebar on page 371 for actions you can take after being grappled.

SUMMARY
Dane does 11 damage to the Boogieman; it is now clearly suffering.
Wang runs for the door and readies his pistols.
Amadea substantiates.
The Boogieman grapples Dane's neck.

--

Please add your weapon stats to your stat block - damage, range, recoil, etc. Amadea, don't worry about that - unarmed attacks are very easy to calculate.

Wang, you can reduce your chances of hitting Dane by decreasing to-hit chance by an equal amount.

Unfazed by the shadow creature wrapping around his neck, Dane dropped his gun and sank razor-sharp claws into its belly.

Wang appeared at the door, guns ready. He chucked one of them away, where it sailed uselessly through the air and landed on Michael's bed right behind Dane. Wang fired his other pistol - a well-aimed shot, but the Boogieman was too quick.

With a vigorous shout, Amadea kicked at the Boogieman. Her balance was off and she barely missed his back.

Then, the Boogieman simply disappeared. To Dane and Amadea, it looked as if he blinked out of existence. But Wang's sensitive eyes saw more: the Boogieman faded down into the shadows on the floor, becoming one with them. He looked to be on the verge of death.

"WHAT IS GOING ON?" Mary yelled from the main room.

--

Dane's attack barely hits. 2 damage +2 from the strong all-out attack *1.5 because it is cutting damage creates a total of 6 damage. It appears that the Boogieman is more susceptible to non-piercing attacks.

Wang's thrown pistol attack automatically fails; Yin lands on Michael's bed. Yang was well aimed, but the Boogieman successfully dodged it.

Amadea's kick is against DX. Skill is 10, roll is 12 - a failure.

Wang's Enhanced Time Sense allows him to see how the Boogieman disappeared.

Mary runs up from the main room. She cannot yet see into the room, but she will next turn. She definitely heard the gunshots.

SUMMARY

Dane does 6 damage to the Boogieman.
Wang throws one of his guns away.
Amadea misses.
The Boogieman disappears, releasing Dane's neck.
Mary Elsworth runs up behind Wang.

--

Doing your rolls in advance is fine, but always do break the math down - for double checking and so we can all learn the system better. Remember that this isn't D&D - you're not automatically aware of all modifers that may be involved - which means I have to work the math from scratch anyway. If I can see the part you've already done it saves me a lot of time. For instance "Raw damage is 8 piercing" is great.

Reminder: Mary shouldn't know that magical/paranormal/etc entities exist.

Recovering his breath, Dane assessed the state of his companions. Glancing at Amadea, he asked, "Are you hurt? I saw him claw you."

--

If she is willing, Dane will attempt First Aid on Amadea. Skill is 15, roll is 8.

Amadea held still while Dane patched the nasty gash in her stomach. Mary stepped into the room and took in the situation in an instant - the smoking assault rifle on the floor, the bullet holes on the wall. Her face turned a bright shade of red. "What... do you think ... YOU'RE DOING?" She yelled. "YOU'RE NOT EVEN FROM THE GOVERNMENT ARE YOU? GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!"

From the shadow of the computer desk emanated a dark whispery laugh. The Boogieman was watching.

--

Amadea's wounds are now Bandaged, restoring 1 HP. Dane can now perform more complex medical aid if he likes. See page 424.

"So I suppose you think this," Dane said, gesturing at Amadea's wound, "just magically appeared? Your son has been kidnapped by a man in possession of a highly classified government device. Unless you think the police are better informed and better able to handle this kind of thing, I'd suggest you trust us to do our jobs."

"At least the police didn't shoot up my walls! Honestly, what do you think you're doing? I demand an explanation, or I'm calling 9-1-1!"

--

Because Dane is trying to make Mary make a snap decision against her better judgement, he is using the Fast-Talk skill, which defaults to IQ-5. Dane recieves an additional -4 because Mary is so upset and +2 for his clever, hard-to-disprove story, for a total skill of 3. Roll is 10, a failure.

After one more failed attempt to calm Mary down, she will probably attempt to call the police.

--

The party attempted to persuade Mary to behave certain ways in the past (like let them see the room), but those were automatic successes because Mary was so desperate for help. Now with bulletholes in the wall, it looks like Mary is going to require more than a growl from a dragonborn soldier to calm down.

3 is of course the best possible roll in the game, with a likelihood of less than half a percent. Rolling a 3 or 4 is a critical success, which would have provoked a very postive response in Mary.

If there's no official SPERTS website that's set up for civilian to see, then the following happens, if there is, skip right to the conversation
-------------------
While Mary was distracted confronting the dragonborn, Xiaoming quickly cooked up a simple webpage with some fake info and the telephone number to SPERTS' PR department, as well as a few key info with low enough security clearance that it's safe to be given to involved civilians. Note that Xiaoming started the webpage making as soon as he has heard Mary from outside the room, his Enhanced Time Sense should allow such fast reaction.
--------------------
Not sure whether Computer Operation or Computer Programming skill is used here, either way, skill level is 16, roll gets 8. Just in case, Forgery is at 10, roll gets 9
-------------------

Conversation:
"Ma'am, we do exist, just not well-known enough" Xiaoming pulled the SPERTS website up onto the browser of the computer in the room
