Episode 2: Space Race from Space Empty
PostSubject: Episode 2: Space Race from Space   Episode 2: Space Race from Space EmptyWed Sep 26, 2012 4:40 pm

It had been a month since the run-in with the Boogieman, and the S.P.E.R.T.S team was already called back up for duty. The flight this time was much longer; they lifted off at sundown and the sun was now coming up through the tiny windows of the transport.

"Allright ladies, here's the situation," said Griswold, kicking three duffel bags toward the team. "A UFO just crash-landed on earth, and we believe it may contain powerful alien technology. Maybe even survivors. The tricky part it is that it landed in Siberia, where the Ruskies technically have authority. Now Uncle Sam is absolutely definitely not allowed to send troops into Siberia, and that's where you come in. Your primary objective is to keep the Ruskies from getting access to that UFO. Destroy it if you have to! There's a pack of C4 in the dragon's duffel; you know how it works. Your secondary objective is to make first contact with the pilot and take pictures of the crash site. If the LZ is safe, you click on your beacons and I'll come in to help you load the crap into here. If it isn't safe, blow whatever you leave behind. There's a rendezvous point a day to the north of your position. Now I'm setting you down in a safe area away from the drop-point; you get there before the bad guys do. And you hussle - the crash site is smack dab between a military lab and a podunk russian fishing village. If anyone gets in your way, you kill em if you have to. Ruskies with that UFO would be devastating for our national security. Oh and one more thing: if you get captured, the government will deny any knowledge of your existence. Any questions?"

--

All 3 duffel bags contain white artic clothing and boots - add them to your inventory and wear them; you'll need them where you're going. Arctic garb weighs 15 pounds and gives +5 to HT rolls resisting the effects of cold (Basic Set page 430). However, the crampons on the boots give -1 to Stealth while moving (while giving other bonuses for moving on ice, as well as increasing kicking damage; High-Tech page 63). The bags also have 3 days rations of food and water.

Amadea's duffel bag contains a high-res digital camera that holds 300 pictures (High-tech page 43).
Dane's contains a 2.5 pound C4 kit (10dx3 cr ex damage, High-tech page 186), 500' of detonating cord (page 187), and a box of matches.
Wang's contains a laminated paper map of the area:

Episode 2: Space Race from Space Siberiamapcopy

As before, this portion is free roleplaying. Strap into your drop pod when you're ready to begin.

Dane, note that Siberia is cold enough that the HIDE is likely to be unreliable. In sheltered, warmer, or urban areas it should function, but out in the open it'll probably sputter out.

"Exactly what temperature did you say it was outside?" Dane asked incredulously. He'd heard of Siberia and immediately marked it down as "don't even go here" on his mental map of Earth. He was reptilian, and his cold-blood would not take well to the extreme conditions present in their current mission.

"This is absurd. I am not like you humans - my body does not do well in cold weather," he huffed. Although not a coward, he knew better than to question biology. He sent a plea for help in Wang's direction via his eyes.

"Well now I took that up with the brass," said Griswold. "I said: 'Why are we sending a lizard into the snow?' And you know what they said? 'Stop being such a baby!' Oh wait, that was me that said that. Get in your long johns, you'll be fine. If you feel stiff go light a fire. Put on your big boy pants!"

"I... you... what..." Dane's face became a mask as he struggled to control his anger. Jets of flame danced in his nostrils, but he turned away from Griswold to prevent himself from doing anything rash. "I am not a baby," he muttered under his breath.

Dane began to clean his weapon while he waited for his companions to ready themselves. It never ceased to amaze him how quickly human weaponry became dirty despite never actually making contact with the enemy. No blood, yet it still became soiled with grease, dirt, and all kinds of various thing humans had to deal with.

"I will take nothing more," Dane said, his tone controlled only through respect for his friend. "If I am to die here in this wasteland, then so be it."

Still not satisfied, Dane scrubbed a bit harder on his rifle. There was a distinct clinking sound as his hand slapped against the side of the aircraft from a missed stroke.

"Hey, don't you be talking about Muggles," Griswold warned. "Harry Potter is one world we REALLY don't want to open a portal to. And as for you, my cold-blooded pansy - here's a vest warmer for ya. I was gonna save it for me, sitting at the evac for I don't even know how long ... but if it'll make you shut up, take it."

--

Griswold gives Dane a vest warmer, which is battery powered. It raises the effective temperature by 25 degrees for one continuous hour. The battery lasts for six activations.

"I don't need your trinkets," Dane snarled. His mood was thoroughly sour by now, and the that he was already starting to stiffen a bit didn't help.

--

Dane's pride is hurt. As he is a Dragonborn, his mind is unlikely to be changed. It is possible he might be convinced once on the ground however.

Griswold shrugged at Dane. "I'm your handler, not your Mama. Don't come whining back to me just 'cause it's a little chilly." After a few minutes of fiddling, Wang managed to improve the electrical flow from the vest battery, slightly increasing its life.

--

Improving the vest is an Engineering (Electrical) roll, which defaults to any other Engineering skill -4, for a total of 12. Roll is 11, which adds a seventh activation to the vest.

Drop will happen when all 3 players post that they get into their drop pods.

Amadea offered Dane a sympathetic look. "You're brave to go in the cold," she said. She hoped he would do alright, his skills were valuable to the team.

She pulled on her outfit, smiling because the boots fit nicely, unlike some boots that felt like walking around in a pair of wooden blocks. She ran a hand through her hair, walked over to her drop pod, and strapped herself in.

"Muggles, muggles, muggles," she whispered to herself once Griswold couldn't hear her. That guy was mean and she didn't trust him.

Dane grumbled at Amadea's encouragement. He had a feeling it wasn't the last time he would ever be asked to do something life threatening, but for some reason this was different. It felt wrong, like he wasn't supposed to be here. As a soldier though, his duty was put these concerns out of his mind.

"Lets get on with this then," he exclaimed, strapping himself into his drop pod while ignoring the proffered vest. Bracing himself, he let out a small puff of flame that was probably going to be his last for quite a while.

Note: after equipping all of his arctic gear of course

The drop pods slid easily out of the ship, and wind whistled by for several nerve-racking minutes. "I had to drop you from high-altitude," Griswold said over the radios. "So the dang Ruskies wouldn't see us coming in."

Three sets of parachutes deployed before the landing thrusters finally set the drop pods down. They shattered into harmless biodegradable fragments, and the team found itself standing in a snowy valley (at the Drop Zone location).

--

Your best options to get to the crash site are to go north (the stealthiest route), south through the Russian village (the safest and probably fastest route), or cut cross-country (the shortest and riskiest route).

"Let's see here," Xiaoming surveyed the map he was given, "So far as I can see, the easiest way to the crash site is going southeast through the town Norlisk. Maybe we can even find supplies? I'm freezing here."
Suddenly he realized something, and asked the only girl on the team:"Erm...Amadea, right? Do you happen to speak Russian?"

"This is not a time for silly puns!" Dane exclaimed. "Of course we should rush! If we do not we will all die here in the cold." Dane sniffed the air. The cold subzero wind burned his nostrils as he verified that they were alone. Glancing in the direction Xiaoming had indicated, he said, "let us be off," and began to trudge through the snow.

He could already feel his body stiffening up.

--

Dane will only don the vest if his friends insist upon it.

"The goal is to not run into the Russians, right?" Amadea asked in return. "Because, well, not really. I can understand what they're saying, but not talk to them. I can also communicate feelings to them telepathically, like apathy, so they don't care if they see us."

The party set off. The sky was clear but the air was bone-numbingly cold - well below 0. The arctic boots left big, spiked tracks in the powdery snow.

--

Hiking through snow costs 1 FP/hour. The party's move speed is the slowest person's basic move (Wang has 4) divided by 3 - or 1.3. Norlisk is 5 miles away, which means 4 hours of hiking. Finally, you must make a HT or Survival (Arctic) roll every 30 minutes to avoid losing even more HP, gaining +5 from your arctic clothes. I will handle those rolls for you.

Dane, let me know if you want to don the vest to slow down the rapid drop of your cold-blooded body heat. The local temperature is -14 F, which is 4 "ticks" below your threshold temperature. Either way, your HT or Survival (Arctic) rolls also cost 1 HP if you fail.

I'll pick things back up just outside Norlisk. The party is likely to be very tired and miserable after hours of trudging.

After about an hour of walking through snow, Dane was beginning to grow decidedly frozen. "What do they call this place?" he asked. "How can anyone live here? There is nothing - no food, no game, no enemies, just ice."

He watched as the snow drifted lazily around him, his boots clomping along with a measured step. It was all he could do to avoid thinking about how stiff his joints were becoming.

--

Dane will not use the vest unless his allies insist.

"Be glad the entire planet isn't like this," Amadea replied. "Unlike many solar systems with a different climate for each planet, Earth has many solar systems."

She didn't say much else, she was too cold, and she didn't want to complain with a cold-blooded creature beside her. It would be rude.

"Dane, I think you really should put that vest on. I've seen your cold tolerance, it is not safe for you to trudge through this place without proper heat source." Xiaoming was obviously worried. Him being such a skinny person doesn't help his case either. He shivered in the Siberian wind.

"I WILL NOT USE YOUR COWA--" Dane began, but a snow drift in his path caused him to fall face first into the ground. If he were capable of it, he probably would have turned a bright red as he regained his footing, but neither his biology nor his current climate allowed for that. Grudgingly, he put on the vest and activated it.

The party trudged in silence through the snowy valley, grateful at least that the snow was only on the ground and not in the air. Cold-blooded Dane and wispy Amadea suffered quietly as the cold sank in past the thick clothes. Finally, they passed out of the valley and looked down on a dinky Russian town. A quick survey of the warehouses and rumbling trucks suggested that this was an industrial town. A fishery sat quiet near the icy shore of a large lake.

--

All team members lose 4 FP from hiking through snow. Dane and Wang's high HT (14) allows them to withstand further exhaustion from cold, but Amadea fails 2 HT (10) rolls, making her total FP loss 6.

The temperature is -14 F, but Dane's vest makes his effective temperature 11 F, which is 1 tick below his threshold of 32 F. Thus, Dane loses 1 Basic Speed and DX after the first hour of hiking. It can be recovered after 1 hour of rest in a warm area (over 32 F).

You should be able to find basic non-luxury items in Norlisk without too much searching. Temperatures in town will probably be slightly warmer.

It is now noon. You are 7 miles from the crash site.

Not particularly caring for Earth's politics, Dane activated his HIDE before strolling off into town. His gait was decidedly limp, as he found it rather difficult to take even a single step without his body resisting. "I believe these... Russians as you call them are in possession of a powerful tonic that can warm you up. I am going to seek some of this."
