Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Episode 2: Space Race from Space   Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 EmptySat Oct 20, 2012 8:33 pm

The three cops outside the snowcloud continued emptying their clips in Amadea's direction. The machine gunner levelled his weapon and let loose. Fire flashed from the barrel. Amadea stood calmly, completely still as bullets whizzed all around her.

--

The grenade will go off in 2 seconds.

So far, Amadea has dodged dozens of shots - but if she doesn't find cover or insubstantiate, it's only a matter of time before even the frantic firing of the police finds a mark.

It takes Amadea one second to insubstantiate. She has succeeded in what she was trying to do - draw attention and become a distraction.

After a brief moment of steadying himself, Dane opened fire on the LMG-wielding trooper. Or at least, he hoped that's what he was aiming at.

PostSubject: Re: Episode 2: Space Race from Space   Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 EmptyMon Oct 22, 2012 1:33 pm

The soldiers kept frantically firing at Amadea as she faded from view. One bullet passed through her shoulder, but she had lost substantiality by then.

Kespa sprinted forward, plasma shotgun at the ready, and stopped herself just outside the blast range of the concussion grenade. She crouched slightly to let Dane fire a burst at the machine gunner. Dane had practiced long and hard at firing accurately - even at full auto in poor visibility. One of his bullets found a mark in the gunner's arm. The Russian grunted and staggered back a step; the heavy weapon slid from his hands. The snow instantly melted around the hot barrel, sending a little puff of steam into the air. Dane allowed himself a grim smile.

Wang heard the gunfire behind him, put his head down, and kept flying.

--

Rule change: because we don't have a tactical grid, we're going to use the simplified range bands on page 7 of Gun Fu. Rather than extensive breakdowns of speeds and ranges, it calculates range in 5 bands (close, short, medium, long, and extreme) with basic penalties. I'll go back to the detailed table when we use a hex grid. Dane and Kespa are now at short range; Amadea is at medium range. Simple enough.

Kespa is now standing just outside the explosion radius. The grenade will go off next turn.

Dane gets -4 to his skill because he is firing in the snow cloud, but the loud rattle of the machine gun and the bright muzzle flashes remove the penalty for not being able to see that far through the snow. He still takes -3 for being at short range, but this is cancelled out by the fact that he is firing 15 shots (+3 to hit). His final skill total is 12, giving him a margin of success of 1, for 1 hit.

Dane hits the right arm (randomly determined from hit location table on page 552); the bullet causes 22 damage. Any damage beyond what is needed to cripple is lost, but the shot does completely cripple the gunner's arm and cause 6 damage. This counts as a major wound, but the gunner makes a successful HT roll against getting knocked down and stunned. He still suffers normal shock penalties. For more on wounds and crippling injuries, see Basic Set 420 (hehe).

Too close for comfort. Still insubstantial, Amadea stood and looked around to watch the proceedings of the battle.

Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Episode 2: Space Race from Space   Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 EmptyTue Oct 23, 2012 12:31 am

Dane threw himself to the ground, knowing what was coming. He wasn't sure what he was looking forward to most - blasting these cops or warming the air with the explosion.

Kespa steadied herself at took careful aim at the Russian furthest to the right. She was careful not to look at the blast area, as her infravision could be temporarily blinded by the scorching heat.

Two foes - including the machine gunner - were consumed in fire as Dane's grenade did its work. The blast wave struck Kespa hard in the chest, but she kept her feet. The man she was aiming at dove forward when he heard the blast; and that brought him close enough that her shotgun was likely to do terrible damage.

Amadea stood quietly from a safe distance and watched. She missed the certainty of space combat. This was barbaric. Little better than clubs and sticks.

--

The grenade explodes, doing 34 damage in a 10-yard radius. Damage is reduced based on how far away the target is. The machine gunner and one of the cops in the snow cloud die instantly. 1 cop is on the very edge of the blast area; he only takes 1 damage. Two cops outside the snow cloud are still unscathed. The other is in the snow cloud, as snow and Russian-bits fly by. Kespa has aimed at him, giving her +1 to hit on her next shot. The Russian is now within 10 yards, so the special rules for shotgun attacks at close range now apply.

The two cops outside the cloud are beyond getting startled. They immediately charge forward, firing blindly into the snow cloud. They miss completely.

--

I'm giving your characters inner voices sometimes; feel free to overwrite them. It's just for the sake of the narrative.

Kespa fires one shot at the Russian and grinned as the blast of greenish light cut through the snow cloud toward her enemy.

---

Close range means initial damage is 6(4d) and the Russian's DR is multiplied by 6 as well. Huge piercing does double damage after all that (?).

Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Episode 2: Space Race from Space   Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 EmptyTue Oct 23, 2012 1:22 pm

Dane readied his rifle while Amadea idly wished she had brought herself a pack of cards of a pocket scrabble board or something. Kespa's shotgun flashed with blue fire; a moment later the last Russian in the snow cloud simply disappeared in a blossoming explosion of hissing plasma. Dane noticed that it smelled a bit like bubble gum.

The two remaining cops crouched and fired into the snow cloud. Their shots were utterly futile, and now their clips were empty.

--DANE--

Dane's rifle is ready to go; the target he was aiming at just got blown to bits.

--KESPA--

Correction: Kitkat, I incorrectly wrote the plasma shotgun as doing huge piercing damage (pi+); it's supposed to do just piercing damage (pi). That's a small nerf on its damage, but as you're about to see, it shouldn't be much of a problem.

Going through your first gunshot in extreme detail. Ask questions if you're confused.

Because the target is within 1/10th of the shotgun's 1/2D range, you don't get an RoF bonus for firing 12 pellets. Instead, we multiply your basic damage and the target's DR by half that value: 6.

Kespa's Guns (Shotgun) skill is 15, -2 for being in the snow cloud, +1 aiming bonus, -3 for being at short range. Kespa's skill total is 11. She rolls 3d6 and gets an 8, for a margin of success of 3. The shotgun's recoil is 1. 1 pellet + (margin of success 3)/(recoil 1) hit the target, for a total of 4 pellet hits. However, we're not using the number of hits; we're using the short-range bonus instead.

The Russian is prone, giving him a penalty to all active defenses. He fails his dodge roll.

With so many hits, I won't be tracking hit location unless he miraculously survives. I'll assume they are all torso hits; but I'm counting Damage Resistance (DR) as the average of his most and least defended areas, or 3. Multiplied by 6, that's 18 DR. Kespa's shotgun has an armor divisor of 0.5; in other words, DR is twice as effective against it! So now he has 36 DR.

Kespa's hit does 4d damage, or 22. Multiplied by 6, that's 110. Minus DR, that's 74 pellet damage! Since you penetrated DR, your follow-up attack occurs: 4d crushing explosive damage. There's no DR to resist this one and it is still multiplied by 6; it causes 54 damage.

Kespa does 124 damage to the target, vaporizing him. The average human only has 10 hitpoints, so Jim, I think what we have here is tons of damage.

You have 2 shots left; if you fire them within the next 10 turns, your 1st shot won't recharge.

--COPS--

The cop injured by the concussion grenade is on the ground holding his face.

One of them fires at the plasma explosion; he can't cause any harm.

The other shoots at Kespa but he gets a -4 penalty for firing into the cloud and another -4 for not being able to see his target exactly. He misses.

--GM--

This is definitely a learning experience for me. In the first version of this post, Kespa's shot did 597 damage. : s

OOC: There isn't a Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 Emot-stare big enough for this Jim.

Suddenly realizing a target vaporized by a grenade wasn't the best one to open fire on, Dane re-leveled his rifle at the next closest Russian and opened fire. For good measure, he added a roar on top and made sure to make it as inhuman as possible.

Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 Empty
PostSubject: Re: Episode 2: Space Race from Space   Episode 2: Space Race from Space - Page 5 EmptyFri Oct 26, 2012 12:38 am

Concerned that her friends might be in danger with all these bullets whizzing around, the space ghost started jogging back into the action.

Dane planted his feet firmly and squeezed the trigger until the rifle clicked. His rounds slammed into his target, causing a quick and messy kill. Dane's savage roar ripped across the Siberian plain, doing nothing to reassure the Russians. The cop holding his burned face watched in horror, then tossed his pistol away, fell to his knees, raised his hands, and shouted:
Spoiler:

His surviving colleague didn't seem to share his taste for surrender. He frantically reloaded his pistol, his eyes fixed on the muzzle flashes from Dane's rifle. Kespa turned in place and took aim.

--

Amadea will reach the Russians in 4 turns (though the battle will probably be over by then). Combat will proceed without your posts until you choose to do something other than run toward the combat area, you reach the area, or the combat ends.

Dane's shot has these modifiers: Skill 16, Determined Attack +1, snow cloud -4, rapid fire 15 shots +3. Total is 16, giving him a margin of success of 7. A recoil of 2 means he hits the target 4 times. A statistically-absurd 3 shots hit the left leg, crippling it and doing 6 damage (any damage above that is lost). The third shot hits the torso, punches through the lightweight combat vest, and does 7 damage. The cop dies.

The cop who was injured in the blast fails a Will roll after seeing his buddies getting shot up. He is now unarmed and crouching.

Kespa will have +1 to hit on her next shot at the last Russian standing.

The last Russian reloaded and raised his pistol, but the unearthly alien voice commanding his submission overwhelmed him. He dropped the loaded pistol into the snow and raised his hands.

--

Kespa's piercing voice gives her an even bigger bonus. She has a quick contest of Intimidation vs Will with the Russian and wins, forcing him to surrender.

--

This concludes the combat. We return now to free role-playing; Wang is still flying through the air toward the crash site. You're free to deal with the prisoners as you see fit - execute them, interrogate them, set them free, loot their gear and vehicles, whatever you like. Play will now proceed even if someone does not post, but that's no reason to be shy!

Keeping his eyes on their new prisoners, Dane exited the snowcloud. As he stood up, he realized laying in the snow was probably a bad idea, but it worked. Without lowering his weapon, Dane approached the snowmobiles for inspections.

"These transportation devices," he said, addressing his companions, "Do either of you know how to operate one?" They seemed fairly straightforward, if one were familiar with modern technology that is. But of course, he wasn't familiar with modern technology. Where was Wang when you needed him?
