| I'd be lying if I said GURPS doesn't look like the final answer to all your RPG system needs. Point-based character creation and active defense are very appealing. Looks a lot easier to GM. Most importantly to me, it's setting-neutral so you can run a campaign anywhere, anytime (and game-design like a crazy person).
At this point in my research it's a contest between GURPS and the much simpler/faster Savage Worlds. Either way my interest in the D&D system is waning; I have deep respect for it and think it's actually a really great introduction to tabletop RPGs (at least it was for me) but I don't see myself playing it in 10 years.
From the get-go I've been looking for a system to play with my kids someday. I think GURPS is it.

| GURPS looks good, but I much prefer what I have seen from Savage Worlds (I like the simplicity of it, and it keeps much of the point based character creation...) | |

| Looking at the Guns of Megiddo setting for Savage Worlds and it looks pretty tempting ... if painfully short. I think I'd want to steal a lot of GURPS wild west stuff. I envision a campaign that starts extremely simple and allows the characters to get more involved/specific as the players learn the rules. Within a few weeks/months I'd want to see plenty of customization ie choosing what holster you use. | |

| I was thinking of Guns of Megiddo not as the setting to run, but as a starting point. Something to use. You could rip off the edges, etc | |

| Kill yourself.
I think I want the camp to start in the civil war right before it ends.

| Been reading a lot of Savage Worlds vs GURPS reviews and I think GURPS is our best bet. SW is attractively simple and fast but I think we'd be frustrated by the lack of depth.

| I am willing to GURPS. I would need to take a look at a rulebook that is more than the basic rules. And the old west scenario seemed to have a lot in the way of history and not much in the way of rules. | |

| It does have a lot of history ... but it also has a staggeringly exhaustive list of everything you might want to buy from a general store, plus a lengthy armory. And while there's a ton of fluff, it also has rules for everything (even surviving getting scalped!)
For instance, study the fairly genius quick-draw rules. Love it!
